# Advanced Motion Design Learning Plan (After Effects Core)
**From fundamentals → advanced, self-paced · Researched and verified: September 2026**

---

## How to use this plan

- **Budget:** ~6–8 hours per week is enough. Every module is scoped to fit that budget; nothing here assumes full-time study.
- **Length:** 7 modules, ≈23 weeks, ≈156 hours total (including practice time).
- **Tools covered:** Adobe After Effects (26.x, 2026 releases) as the core, plus Cinema 4D, Blender, Nuke (Non-Commercial), and expression/scripting tooling where they genuinely matter at the advanced level.
- **Tag legend:** `[EN]` / `[UA]` = language of the linked resource itself · `[PAID]` = costs money · everything else is free · every entry carries a time estimate.
- **Rule of thumb:** watch/read ≤ 30% of a module's time, build ≥ 70%. The exercises and the capstone are the actual curriculum.

## State of the tools — September 2026 (read this first, ~45 min)

Before diving in, spend one evening understanding what changed recently, so you don't learn dead workflows:

- **After Effects 26.x (2026):** the AI-powered **Object Matte** replaced Roto Brush (26.2); Advanced 3D gained depth of field and a new Curl Noise effect (26.3); 26.0 added 3D parametric meshes, Substance 3D materials and SVG import; 26.5 (Sept 2026) added Object Matte disk caching, next-gen guides, ACES 2.0 / OCIO 2.5.1 support and a modernized Effect Controls panel. Overview: [What's new in After Effects — Adobe Help](https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/desktop/what-s-new/whats-new.html) — guide [EN], free, ~30 min skim.
- **AE AI Assistant (2026):** built into AE — it can create layers, write and debug expressions, and organize projects. Knowing how to drive it (and where it fails) is now an advanced skill. Review: ["After Effects Has an AI Assistant. Is It Any Good?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBRxqTsuiE8) — video [EN], free, ~15 min.
- **Firefly generative media (Sept 2026):** Adobe's new Generative Media Tool brings Firefly video generation (incl. Generative Extend) into Premiere/AE timelines. Announcement: [Adobe blog, Sept 8, 2026](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2026/09/08/generate-create-directly-in-your-timeline-with-new-ai-powered-innovations-in-premiere-after-effects) — article [EN], free, ~10 min.
- **Cinema 4D 2026.x** (UV workflow overhaul, Redshift 2026.x) and **Blender 5.x** (overhauled color management, new animation tools) are the current big releases — both appear in Module 2.
- **Duik Ángela** (RxLaboratory) remains the free, open-source industry standard for character rigging in AE — Module 3 is built around it.

## Module 1 — Advanced Expressions & Procedural Rigging
**~3 weeks · ~20 hrs · prerequisite for everything else in this plan**

**Goal / outcome:** you can read, write and debug expressions without copy-paste superstition; you build procedural, controller-driven rigs (carousels, bounce/overshoot systems, audio-reactive setups) that a teammate could animate without touching keyframes; you use the AE AI Assistant to generate and critique expression code instead of fearing it.

### Resources (in order)
1. [Expression basics — Adobe Help](https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/desktop/work-with-expressions/expression-basics/expression-basics.html) — official guide [EN], free, ~1 hr. Modern JS expression engine; skim if you know basics, study the linking/looping sections.
2. [3 Cheat Expressions to Save Time — Domestika blog](https://www.domestika.org/en/blog/11114-free-tutorial-3-cheat-expressions-to-save-time-in-animating-in-after-effects) — article [EN], free, ~20 min. Warm-up.
3. [Realistic Bounce and Overshoot — Dan Ebberts, MotionScript.com](https://www.motionscript.com/articles/bounce-and-overshoot.html) — article [EN], free, ~45 min. The classic inertia/overshoot technique, explained properly.
4. [Physical Simulations series — Dan Ebberts, MotionScript.com](https://www.motionscript.com/mastering-expressions/simulation-basics-1.html) — article series [EN], free, ~2 hrs (parts 1–3). Velocity, exponential decay, sine waves — the math behind "feels alive" motion.
5. [Tutorial: Create a Carousel Rig in After Effects — School of Motion](https://schoolofmotion.com/blog/carousel-rig-after-effects) — in-depth tutorial [EN], free, ~1.5 hrs. Your first real procedural rig.
6. [After Effects Scripting Guide (community docs)](https://ae-scripting.docsforadobe.dev/) — reference [EN], free, ~2 hrs to explore. When expressions aren't enough: `.jsx` scripts, the AE object model. Read the Overview + a few object pages; bookmark the rest.
7. ["After Effects Has an AI Assistant. Is It Any Good?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBRxqTsuiE8) — video [EN], free, ~15 min. Where AI-generated expressions shine and where they quietly break.

### Practice (do both)
- **Exercise 1 (~4 hrs):** Rebuild your most-used animation as a rig — a "super controller" null with sliders (bounce amount, overshoot, delay per layer) driven by expressions, applied to a 10-layer logo sting. No plain keyframes allowed on the animated layers.
- **Exercise 2 (~5 hrs):** Write a small utility script (`.jsx`) or an expression-driven template that automates something you do weekly (e.g., batch-rename layers, stagger layers by N frames, auto-fit a comp to selection). Test it on 3 different comps.

### 🎬 Inspiration
- [Mt. Mograph — Motion design demo reel 2024 (Vimeo)](https://vimeo.com/974476850) — video [EN], free, ~2 min. Almost everything here is expression-driven motion; this is what "rigged, not keyframed" looks like at full speed.

## Module 2 — 3D & Camera Work (AE Advanced 3D · Cinema 4D · Blender)
**~4 weeks · ~28 hrs · runs partly in parallel with Module 3 if you're short on time**

**Goal / outcome:** you can design and animate true 3D scenes for motion graphics — camera language, lighting, depth of field — choosing the right tool (AE's Advanced 3D renderer, Cinema 4D via Cineware, or Blender) per project, and comping 3D renders back into AE correctly.

### Resources (in order)

8. [Blender 2D Animation Basics (Grease Pencil)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaOEsAOnq7s) — video [EN], free, ~30 min. Taste of where 2D and 3D merge — relevant for stylized mograph.

### Practice (do both)
- **Exercise 1 (~6 hrs):** "Product turntable" — model or import a simple object in C4D (or Blender), light it, animate a camera orbit with easing you control via a rig, render, and finish in AE (grade + type). Deliver a 10-second 4K loop.
- **Exercise 2 (~6 hrs):** Same brief, native AE only: build a fake-3D scene with the Advanced 3D renderer (DOF included), then write a short note (½ page) comparing the three pipelines — where each one wins.

### 🎬 Inspiration
- [Jarbrain — Motion Reel 2025 (Vimeo)](https://vimeo.com/1091956757) — video [EN], free, ~2 min. 2D/3D mixed brand work, UI/HUD design, kinetic type — a realistic target for a working advanced motion designer.

## Module 3 — Character Rigging & Animation (Duik Ángela)
**~3 weeks · ~20 hrs**

**Goal / outcome:** you can rig a biped character with Duik Ángela (bones, auto-rig, IK, walk controller) and animate an acting performance — not just moving parts — including a solid walk cycle with weight and follow-through.

### Resources (in order)
1. [Duik Ángela — official tool page & download (RxLaboratory)](https://rxlaboratorio.org/rx-tool/duik/) — tool + docs [EN], free & open source, ~30 min to install and set up.

7. [Motion Practice with Ben Marriott — Motion Design School](https://motiondesign.school/courses/motion-practice-with-ben-marriott/) — course [EN] [PAID], ~15 hrs. Optional deep dive into frame-by-frame + AE hybrid craft.

### Practice (do both)
- **Exercise 1 (~6 hrs):** Rig a simple biped from scratch: bones → auto-rig → IK legs → walk controller → a few controller-driven expressions (e.g., automatic head follow). Deliver a rig file a stranger could animate.
- **Exercise 2 (~5 hrs):** Animate a 6–8 second acting shot with your rig: character walks in, notices something, reacts (take/double-take). Focus on timing, weight and overlap — polish 3 key moments to portfolio quality.

### 🎬 Inspiration

## Module 4 — Motion Graphics Systems & Design Consistency
**~3 weeks · ~20 hrs**

**Goal / outcome:** you think in systems, not single shots: you can build a styleframe set, define motion principles (durations, curves, transitions) that scale across a whole campaign, and execute kinetic typography that stays consistent across dozens of elements.

### Resources (in order)
1. [Motion Design Style Frames — free template & example (Milanote)](https://milanote.com/templates/motion-design/style-frames) — template + guide [EN], free, ~30 min. What a styleframe board is and how to build one.

### Practice (do both)
- **Exercise 1 (~5 hrs):** Design a mini motion identity: 4 styleframes + a one-page motion spec (your easing curves, transition durations, do/don't rules) for a fictional product. Get feedback in a community (r/MotionDesign or a Discord) and revise once.
- **Exercise 2 (~6 hrs):** Build a kinetic-typography system: a 20–30 second piece driven by ONE master comp/rig (Module 1 skills!) where type treatments, transitions and timing all come from shared controllers — then re-skin it to a second brand in under an hour using only the controllers.

### 🎬 Inspiration

## Final quality notes

- All links were checked as accessible and correctly tagged (free vs [PAID]) in September 2026. Free tools that require an account (Cineversity, Nuke Non-Commercial) are still free — registration only.
- If a YouTube video ever disappears, search its exact title — mirrors and re-uploads of the key tutorials usually exist within days.
- Weekly rhythm that works: 2 sessions of ~2 hrs for resources + 1 session of 2–4 hrs for the current exercise. Never start a week with "watching something" — start with yesterday's file open.
